Pensioner drives her long lasting ambition

A vivacious Durham lady is overjoyed to achieve her life-long ambition of driving a bus – at the grand old age of 70.

June Slater, from Newton Hall, says taking the wheel of a bus is something she has wanted to do since she was a young woman when she first saw United drive through Durham City’s Market Place down Silver Street. But she says “women drivers were sadly unheard of in those days”.

We were delighted to help June tick another event off her bucket list.

One of our driving instructors supported June to negotiate a bus through a challenge course at our Family Fun Day in Gateshead.

June wrote in a letter to Go North East: “What a feeling to control that huge vehicle. It is a lifetime ambition fulfilled. You all made an elderly lady very, very happy.

“Thank you Go North East and all your staff – that Family Fun Day was a credit to your company.”
