Christmas Lights to be switched on around the North East
Christmas Lights are set to be switched on around the region. We've put together a handy guide to make sure you don't miss out on the festivities. Which switch on will you be going to?
Newcastle - Thursday 17 November
The traditional Newcastle Christmas Lights switch on will take place on Thursday 17 November on Grey Street at the base of Grey’s Monument. Your favourites, Steve and Karen from Metro's Breakfast Show, will be joined by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Cllr Hazel Stephenson and some other special guests.
South Shields - Thursday 17 November
Kick off the festive season in style and bring the whole family down to South Shields town centre to enjoy the amazing atmosphere as the Christmas lights are switched on! Special guests 5ive (Ritchie, Scott and Sean) will put on a fantastic performance for the South Shields crowds and help switch on the lights alongside the Mayor of South Tyneside.
Sunderland - Thursday 17 November
Join special guests for music, entertainment and fireworks at this spectacular Christmas lights switch on.
Whitley Bay - Friday 18 November
This year’s North Tyneside Christmas Light Switch On will take place on 18 November. The event will start at 4pm, with the switch on scheduled for 5.30pm on Whitley Road, Whitley Bay. Lights in North Shields, Wallsend and Tynemouth town centres will also come on that night. Entertainment will include local choirs and panto stars.
Durham - Sunday 20 November
From lunch time on 20 November, festive cheer will arrive in Durham City as the City builds up to the all-important switch on. The event will be a magical one with the City delivering a very special event to mark the start of the festive season.
Gateshead - Thursday 24 November
A magical evening of festive fun is to be had at Trinity Square. Heart Radio’s Justin and Kelly will be getting the party started from 4pm. Keep the kids entertained with FREE face painting, games and much more.
Middlesbrough - Sunday 27 November
As well as the Reindeer Parade, Sunday 27 November will see the Christmas lights switched on. It will feature Heart North East's drive time presenter, Tom Campbell, and the Wildcats of Kilkenny for the countdown.
