Clever thinking helps Gateshead school save funds

A Gateshead school has made more money than expected in its annual fundraising event by boxing-clever with its approach to transport.

Riverside Primary Academy in Dunston got in touch with Go North East when it needed to get the whole school to the Derwent Walk, in Rowlands Gill, to start their sponsored walk.

Rather than hiring private transport, the school enquired if their 300 pupils and staff could hop on a service bus that stops nearby.

Go North East was more than happy to provide some additional buses on its Red Kite no.47 bus route to help the school out.

With Go North East now charging young people just £1 per single journey, there was a significant saving to be had.

All pupils and staff walked from Rowlands Gill back to the school in Dunston, raising much-needed funds to buy a performance stage for use in school. The total money raised is still in the process of being collected.

Jan Sellers from Riverside Primary Academy said: “Go North East did us a massive favour supplying buses as not only was it cheaper, it meant everyone was transported to the starting point quickly and safely.

“We really can't thank everyone enough as it really helped make the event a success. We were lucky to have such a lovely, dry autumn day too, so we all had an enjoyable day.”

Development manager at Go North East, Mark Ellis said: "If and when it’s possible, we will always try to help community organisations save money on trips for large groups by adding additional capacity to an existing service.

“We were delighted to help the school out. We're glad they enjoyed their day and we hope they've raised lots of money.”
