Go North East recognised as UK Business Hero

Go North East has been recognised as a ‘UK Business Hero’ following a campaign from the British Chambers of Commerce.

The region’s largest bus company was recognised due to the incredible work it has been doing in the most challenging of years, and each business has been commended with a UK Business Heroes stamp which demonstrates how much they have supported the local community during the pandemic.

As part of the recognition, Go North East received a letter of support from HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO, praising the company’s efforts for going the extra mile during the coronavirus pandemic.

During the first lockdown, Go North East played a key role in ensuring that key workers and those making essential journeys could do so safely and with confidence, and their commitment to clean, safe and comfy travel has continued throughout.

At the height of the pandemic, the company’s workforce also united to raise well over £10,000 for various charities and local causes, including the NHS, Great North Air Ambulance, Treetop’s children’s ward at University Hospital of North Durham, and local foodbanks.

James Ramsbotham, chief executive, North East England Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted that Go North East has been nominated for a Business Hero award.

“It is fantastic recognition for the tremendous work this company does to ensure our region is connected and everyone can travel for work or pleasure in a reliable and cost-effective way.

“The recent announcement about its electric buses is further proof of its innovative approach to travel. Well done and many congratulations to the whole team.”

Martijn Gilbert, managing director at Go North East, added: “It gives me great pride to hear that we have been recognised as a UK Business Hero.

“Our team have worked tirelessly to ensure we keep the people of the North East moving. They’ve also gone above and beyond in not only working with the additional safety and cleanliness arrangements that we’ve put in place during the pandemic, but also supporting the communities that we serve with a phenomenal fundraising effort.

“I have been blown away by their energy, positivity and generosity throughout these challenging times. Everyone working as part of our company, and the services we provide, should be immensely proud of this award.”
