Press release —
Free bus travel for veterans this Armed Forces Day
To mark Armed Forces Day, Go North East is offering free bus travel for veterans, cadets and serving members of the armed forces on 27 and 28 June.
Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday of June, falling on 27 June this year.
Ben Gilligan, Managing Director of Go North East, says: “Supporting the Armed Forces community is really important to us as many of our colleagues have served their country before joining Go North East.
“We’re proud to offer free travel for the Armed Forces community this weekend so that veterans, cadets and serving personnel can attend Armed Forces Day events without worrying about travel costs.”
Events are due to take place across the region, including a parade in Newcastle City Centre, a whole weekend of celebrations in Seaburn and a family fun day in Stanley.
Sarah Jones, a driver at Go North East who is also a British Army veteran, says: “I think the reason so many veterans choose a career in the bus industry is because it’s one of the few careers that instils camaraderie - from the minute you walk into the bus depot, you’re acknowledged, you’re supported and most importantly, valued!
“I think it’s great that we’re offering free travel for the Armed Forces community this weekend. For drivers who are also veterans, anything we can do to show connection and support to our brothers in arms is really important.”
To mark Armed Forces Day on 27 June 2026, Go North East is offering free travel to serving personnel who can produce a current ID card, veterans displaying a veteran’s badge, cadets and anyone travelling in uniform. Find out more on their website.
